HERVEY Bay residents with roots back to South Africa will be excited to know there is a new shop in town catering for those nostalgic moments when only a few treats from home will do.
Klipdrift Safari opened in Scarness in October 2021.
Located at 8b Queens Road, opposite the Beach House Hotel, the store is the second Fraser Coast shop owned and operated by Jakobus Vogel and his son James.

“We had quite a few customers from Hervey Bay who would travel up to our Maryborough store for their favourite South African products, so it made sense for us to expand to the Bay,” he said.
Don’t worry if you live in the Maryborough area, the Bazaar Street store isn’t going anywhere!
South African favourites
The Hervey Bay shop sells a full-range of South African favourites, including: biltong, boerewors, spices and braai mixes, chocolates, cooldrinks and other ingredients you might not always find at the supermarket.
While Klipdrift Safari offers a taste of home for those who have moved over from South Africa, Jakobus said the Maryborough store had attracted quite a lot of Australian customers since opening its doors.
He’s confident the same will happen in Hervey Bay.

“We offer something for South Africans but everyone is welcome here,” he said.
A butcher by trade, Jakobus is especially proud of the biltong, boerewors and other meat products they have on offer.
Biltong
“Our boerewors, smoked cheese sausage, Russians, biltong and dry wors sticks are among the most popular items we sell.”
And if you’re chasing a potjie or a good old fashioned plastic bike for the kids, they stock those too.
“The plastic bikes are actually really popular over here,” he said.

Jakobus invited South Africans living on the Fraser Coast and other residents to visit the store and experience their range of products.
African feel
And for those who want more than just a taste of home, Klipdrift Safari has a unique African feel to it too.
After walking in for the first time you’ll think you’re stopping over at a rest camp in the Kruger National Park after a day out on the dirt track spotting the Big 5.
All you need to do is stick some wors on the braai, rip open a packet of Fritos and you’re good to go.
