THE bragging rights for Queensland’s best boneless leg ham belong right here on the Fraser Coast.
Kawungan Quality Meats won the best Boneless Leg Ham category at the 2021 Queensland Smallgoods State Final.
Owner Dale Newberry told Good News Fraser Coast the award was testament to the hard work, skill and dedication of his team.
“This is not a one-man shop,” he said.
“We took the whole team down to Brisbane for the finals. This means so much to us, we have been pretty close before.”
Kawungan Quality Meats qualified for the state finals after winning the Wide Bay regional competition in August – where they also took home the bacon in the best pork sausage and best Italian sausage categories.
Dale said the accolades came at the perfect time.
He said orders for December were already coming in. He expects to smoke and prepare around 520 hams in the week before Christmas.
“We know we have a good product, but to have experts say you have the best in Queensland is really special,” Dale said.
2021 was the first win for Kawungan Quality Meats at the state competition.
The team finished third two years ago and the 2020 event was not able to go ahead.
“We’re definitely going to have another crack at it again next year.”
Good for the region
Dale said their success was not just good for the business, but for the region as a whole.
He said there were a number of great food products coming out of the Fraser Coast.
Without giving away his secrets to success, Dale said their boneless leg hams were the best in the business because they only ever use 100 per cent Australian pork.
Their cures, salts and blends are also sourced from within Queensland and Australia.
Kawungan Quality Meats smoke all of their hams in store at the corner of Main Street and Doolong Road.
And if you’re after the best boneless leg ham in Queensland but can’t get down to Hervey Bay.
You can shop online too.
And if that wasn’t enough, Kawungan Quality Meats was also announced as the Queensland Regional Retailer of the Year by the Australian Meat Industry Council.
